Wellness Ranch - Animal Care
Hello! I’m Ximena Salinas, passionate about animal welfare. In this space, I’ll be writing about veterinary medicine, sharing everything from tips* to improve your pet's quality of life to behind-the-scenes stories about my life as a veterinarian who happens to be Mexican.
"When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a veterinarian…"
Although I’ve never done a survey or kept count, I’m sure that most of my female colleagues can relate to deciding, from a young age, to embrace a very different way of life. As a woman in this field, I am proud of all of us.
I remember coming home after my first day working with dairy cows in Ridgetown Campus (Chatham-Kent Ontario) and telling my husband with a smile so wide it showed in the sun's wrinkles: "It's just women, and we do everything! They drive tractors, build fences, cut grass, operate all the machinery to feed the cattle, milk them… we do absolutely everything! There are no gender restrictions."
His face, seeing me so happy, was filled with tenderness. But I also saw the immediate fear of realizing that if I wasn’t afraid of much before, with this new confidence… Imagine what we women can achieve.
Tips*: These are recommendations based on my experience as a Veterinarian (MVZ) and may or may not be applicable to all pets.
Every animal is unique and responds differently to various stimuli. Always consult your veterinarian.
